My new career with Florissant Community College was going strong. Things were finally looking up. I couldnât, however, say the same for Reggie. According to Latrel, Reggie was in the midst of finalizing his divorce, which was turning out to be more costly for him than ours had been. I had asked only for what was due me, but his new wife, who heâd been married to for only four months, she wanted it all! The house, the cars, part ownership of his real estate business, and ten thousand dollars a month in spousal support. I couldnât believe all that she was asking for, and to my recollection, Reggie didnât have that much money to dish out. I truly wished him the best with his situation, but that was what he got for marrying a woman he had known for less than a year.
Thinking about Reggieâs situation made me think about how Roc would impact my life going forward. I had spoken to him briefly yesterday, but heâd seemed busy. Heâd been trying to move his things from the penthouse he once had to the condo he was now living in on the south side of St. Louis.
While at work, I wiggled my fingers on the side of my face and eyeballed the phone on my desk. I contemplated calling him. Why? Because heâd said he was busy, and since he hadnât called me back, maybe that meant he was still busy. I wanted to allow him all the time he needed to get settled, so I quickly dropped my thought about calling him and got back to work.
Minutes later, the ringing phone interrupted me.
âMr. Andersonâs office. How may I help you?â
âDesa Rae, this is Sherri. Is my dad around?â
Sherri was my bossâs daughter. He would never tell his kids when he was going out of town. And it wasnât my place to tell them, either. âNo, he isnât, Sherri. Heâs out of the office today, but you may want to try his cell phone.â
âOkay. Thanks. Iâll do that, but in the meantime, howâs Latrel doing?â
âHeâs fine. I had hoped the two of you would go out on another date, but he told me how busy both of you are.â
âUnfortunately, we are. But I have every intention of calling him soon. You know Iâm in med school, and I never have time to do much of anything.â
âOh, I understand, sweetie. You definitely donât have to explain anything to me. Iâm sure Latrel understands too. Call him when you can. He did mention you the other day, and Iâm sure he would be happy to hear from you.â
âI sure will. Let me call my dad now, and be sure to tell Latrel Iâll call him soon.â
I told Sherri that I would, but shame on me for lying. Latrel hadnât mentioned her at all. Heâd told me that the two of them didnât click. Personally, I thought Sherri was perfect for Latrel, especially since she was in med school, and from what Latrel had said, she was a virgin.
